What is the Opportunity?
SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of initiatives with our customers.
Participants in our Summer Intern Program will work on a variety of projects including building reporting spreadsheets, developing presentations, conducting research, and participating in stakeholder meetings – all to improve their understanding of the Sustainability & Corporate Citizenship fields.
Our Summer Intern Program is an excellent gateway to our full-time Analyst Program.
The CEOAD S&G is structured into two teams: the Strategy Team and the Governance Team.
The Strategy Team develops medium to long-term business strategy in alignment with U.S. CEO’s vision and develops and enforces governance frameworks to maintain firm’s safety and soundness and facilitate effective communication globally. They also provide strategic guidance and support to the U.S. CEO and executive leadership team, facilitating communication coordination, and alignment of efforts to achieve strategic objectives and drive organizational success.
The Governance Team owns the authorship, and manages adherence, to the SMBC Group AD Policy Governance Policy, which is the overarching document that governs the development, implementation, management and controls framework of policies within SMBC Group AD. Further, the Governance Team is responsible for maintaining a centralized repository for policy documents, ensuring version control, accessibility, and security. They also formulate and implement an effective committee framework designed to foster comprehensive and robust information across all businesses. Additionally, they facilitate the implementation of the Issue Management Policy, administering the central issue tracking tool and gathering information on regulatory findings.

How Our Program Works
Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.
This 10-week program commences in June and includes:
- Orientation
- Training with on-the-desk experience
- Senior Speaker Series
- Japanese cultural activities
- Social networking activities
- Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
- Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC
The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2025 or May 2026; excellent academic record
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
- Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
- Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications. Experience with data analysis a plus.
- Ability to comfortably interact with interna/external teams in a professional and mature manner
- Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
- Intellectual curiosity
- Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
