USGA P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship – Alabama Golf Association

ABOUT THE ALABAMA GOLF ASSOCIATION: The AGA is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 120 member clubs represented by over 28,000 individuals. The AGA annually conducts 23 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship.

LOCATION OF INTERNSHIP: Hoover, Alabama

INTERNSHIP LENGTH: Three months, beginning May 2025. Internship length may be extended depending on circumstances and the intern’s preference, allowing for a more immersive experience.

DESCRIPTION: The Alabama Golf Association (AGA) is offering three 3-month USGA P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internships focusing on Junior Golf, Tournament Administration and Operations that are designed to provide valuable hands-on experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration, sports management, or event management. These positions will work with junior golf events and other AGA-conducted male and female tournaments plus USGA qualifiers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
• Learn and study the Rules of Golf and rules officiating best practices
• Serve as a rules official at junior events including AGA championships, Junior Golf Alabama Tour, and USGA qualifiers
• Administrative duties in office and on-site to prepare for a tournament using Golf Genius software
• Tournament operations and set-up including tents, signage, roping and staking tees, cooler fulfillment
• Golf course marking, local rules sheet preparation, hole & tee locations set-up
• Starting and scoring of players
• Monitoring equipment inventory, maintenance, and replenishment
• Course Rating and Handicap administration experience
• Assist with Southern Golf Assoc. Championships (Southern Amateur/Southern Junior)

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to live/work in the Birmingham, AL area during internship
• Strong work ethic with a “Can Do” attitude and willingness to learn
• Highly motivated individual with ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
• Great organizational, leadership & communication skills
• Willingness to travel extensively within Alabama and to Arkansas & South Carolina (SGA Championships)
• Ability to work long hours outdoors including early mornings and weekends
• Capability to lift or move objects up to 40 lbs.
• Basic computer knowledge and skills (Microsoft Office)
• Golf background or strong interest in golf preferred
• Basic knowledge of the Rules of Golf and Golf Genius software is a plus
• Have own transportation and valid driver’s license
• Must be an amateur golfer if applicable. PGM students are eligible. PGA professionals/ apprentices are ineligible.
